Curling – updated

Every four years, I become addicted to Olympic Curling.  I love watching this sport.  I used to watch it as a kid in Western New York– on Canadian TV.  The USA Men’s team is in the Gold Medal final tomorrow morning at 1 AM.  I will be watching.  Later tomorrow morning, I am going to the local curling club’s open house to give it a try myself.

I have toyed with the idea of buying a curling set (expensive!) for the lake.  I won’t–  the season would be short, the ice rough, and no one would help me carry  the sixteen  42 lb. stones down to the lake.  I read this week that a bar in Brooklyn offers up axe throwing, kinda like darts–  I may take that up instead.

What to do, while we wait for the men’s final?  Paula and I made up another 10 pounds of sausage. Late in the afternoon, I fired up the smoker  and loaded it up with some sausage we already had, and two chicken breasts.  Four hours later– the chicken was perfect.  Have not done this before– still experimenting with different foods, and how best to use the smoker.

Grouse season ends next week, finishing my hunting until next Fall.  It was a great year.  I spent a lot of time in the woods, most always accompanied by Porter.

Wednesday, when I came back from Portland, Maine, the temperature reached 73.  Yesterday, it was in the 20’s and I needed to clear the driveway with the snowblower.  I am not done with Winter, yet.  But  I do admit Wednesday was very nice.

  1. I received a Big Green Egg smoker two Christmases ago and love it, as does my family. I recommend keeping a notebook of your smokes to track recipes, time, temperature, and adjustments for next time. If you cook a lot of different foods like I do, it’s easy to forget exactly what you did last time. A 12 pound prime rib roast is going on tomorrow and my daughter has asked for baby back ribs when her friends visit later this week.
